Hot-dip galvanized steel sheet (SGCC): The steel sheet is immersed in molten zinc liquid to form a layer of zinc on the surface. The coating is relatively thick (about 50-100 μm), with strong corrosion resistance, and the coating is firmly bonded to the base material.
Electro-galvanized steel sheet (SECC): Zinc ions are deposited on the steel sheet surface through electrolysis. The coating is thin and uniform (about 2-25 μm), with a smooth surface without zinc lumps, good aesthetics, but its corrosion resistance is not as good as the hot-dip product.
The galvanized layer effectively prevents air and moisture from contacting the steel substrate. At the same time, the electrode potential of zinc is lower than that of iron, providing a cathodic protection (sacrificial anti-corrosion) effect - even if the coating is scratched or the internal steel is exposed, it will preferentially corrode the zinc around it, thereby protecting the steel substrate from rusting. The service life of galvanized steel sheets is 3 to 5 times longer than that of ordinary steel.
Galvanized steel sheets have good forming performance, welding performance and coating performance, and are suitable for various processing techniques such as stamping, bending, cutting, deep drawing, etc. The alloyed galvanized varieties in hot-dip galvanized steel sheets (formed into zinc-iron alloy layers after heating) have better coating adhesion and welding properties.
Compared with high-end anti-corrosion materials such as stainless steel, galvanized steel sheets have lower costs and are a highly cost-effective choice for anti-corrosion steel. The cost of galvanizing for rust prevention is much lower than the treatment cost of other paint coatings.
The surface of galvanized steel sheets is smooth and flat, with metallic luster. Depending on the process, the surface can present different states such as ordinary zinc flakes, fine zinc flakes, or no zinc flakes, and can be directly used or used as the base material for color-coated sheets.
